It seems that DC has finally learned from many of the mistakes that it has made with its previous movie blunders and has decided to stop giving movies over to Zack Snyder.
Zack Snyder directed many of DC’s previously critically panned movies including Man of Steel and Batman V Superman. Zack Snyder has found some success in the past including the graphic novel adaptations of 300 and the Watchman. However DC put some serious trust in the hands Snyder basically handing him every massive asset involved in their extended universe. As many of you also know Snyder is now also directing the Justice league Movies Part 1 and Part 2. This means that Snyder now has control of immensely popular DC characters such as Batman, Superman, the Flash, Aquaman and to a lesser extent Wonder Woman. Snyder’s attempts at creating these characters and story arks have been a mess showcasing to the public that simply making an extended universe isn’t as easy as many might have thought.
Well the internet blew up last weekend over reports that DC and Warner Brother’s has snagged Joss Whedon. Whedon will be known to many as the man who brought the MCU to life in the original Avengers. Whedon has an impressive resume being the brain that created Buffy the Vampire slayer among many other extremely popular early 2000’s television shows. The 2012 Avengers was Whedon’s first big attempt at the big screen and he couldn’t have done a better job. The Avengers achieved a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes and is still the highest grossing MCU movie bringing in 1.519 Billion USD at the box office alone. His follow up Avengers: Age of Ultron was received to a lesser extent with many fans blaming the studio for putting too much on his shoulders in terms of story arcs and casting. Whedon retired from the MCU shortly after Age of Ultron was released.
So what the hell is Whedon doing over at DC? Well the answer makes sense when you think about what Whedon has done and what he is slated to do. Whedon is set to write direct and produce a standalone Batgirl Movie. As we mentioned Whedon’s big break was certainly with the Avengers, but it took off with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. So this makes total sense, Whedon is bringing another comic book story come to life but with a strong female lead. Whedon has actually been calling himself a feminist long before it became a catch phrase consistently making sure that at the core of his hit TV series there was always a strong female presence. This could certainly work and be just the thing that DC needs as Whedon was able to inject some humour into The Avengers which the DCU has without a doubt been lacking.
For those wondering what is “Bat Girl” well Barbara Gordon daughter of commissioner Gordon becomes Batgirl in the comic books prior to her being shot by the Joker which leaves her paralyzed. However received some tech to allow her to become batgirl one again – Could this be the story arc we see portrayed in Whedon’s film? Well if it is than my apologies for spoiling but at this point you should be sold on seeing it already!
Let us know what you think in the comments, are you excited for another Joss Whedon Comic book movie? Should the film follow this similar story arc?
